Stones That Remember: Walking Shivaji Maharaj's Mountain Forts

Every fort trek in the Sahyadris is a walk through the 17th century. The water cisterns still hold monsoon rain. The granaries still stand. And the ramparts still command the same valleys they did when the Maratha empire was run from these heights.

Torna: where it all began

In 1646, a sixteen-year-old Shivaji captured Torna — his first fort, the seed of Swarajya. Standing at Zunjar Machi today, watching the ridgeline stretch toward Rajgad, you understand why he chose it: from here, you see everything.

Rajgad: the capital in the clouds

For 26 years, Rajgad was the capital. Its three machis (fortified spurs) and the Balekilla citadel make it the finest fort architecture in the Sahyadris. Sleeping on Sanjivani Machi under the stars is the closest thing to time travel we offer.

We don't trek to forts. We trek to the 17th century.
